Message from the Executive Director, Dr. Juan F. Arratia

Welcome to the Web Page of the Student Research Development Center. Our Center was created in 2008 by the Ana G. Méndez University System to help and enhance research activities for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors from Universidad Metropolitana, Universidad del Este and Universidad del Turabo. An early research experience is an effective tool to motivate students to open the gate for discovery and innovation cementing the base for a scientific career.

Our Center has developed a successful K-12 Research Program funded by the National Science Foundation and the Puerto Rico Space Grant Consortium impacting hundreds of grade 10, 11 and 12 students from public and private schools in Puerto Rico. The K-12 Research Program has three components: the AGMUS Saturday Research Academy during the fall and spring semesters; the AGMUS Summer Research Experiences at US mainland research centers for high school students and science and mathematics teachers, and the AGMUS Pre-College Research Symposia. These three programs constitute a leading early research model in the nation to foster the research enterprise at the K-12 level.

At the undergraduate level our Center offers to the university community of Puerto Rico four programs:

  1. Summer research experiences for STEM majors at research institutions in Puerto Rico, the US mainland and abroad.
  2. An Annual AGMUS Research Symposium in Puerto Rico.
  3. Support for presentation of research outcomes of research scholars in national research conferences (SACNAS, ABRCMS, NCUR, IEEE, ACS, AMS and NIS).
  4. Fulbright Visiting Scholar Series.

In addition to these four programs, the objective of our Center is to transfer undergraduates to graduate school and in that direction we offer preparation for GRE and TOEFL exams, personal statement and graduate school application process, as well as mentoring and connectivity to partners and scientists around the world. The success of AGMUS at the pre-college, and undergraduate and graduate levels is impressive in numbers and quality. We are producing a pipeline of competitive professionals in STEM fields for the nation and the Student Research Development Centers is proud of their activities and accomplishments.
